Calcined Kaolin is an anhydrous aluminum silicate produced by heating hydrous china clay after water washing to high temperatures in a rotary kiln. The calcination process gives an increase in the original hardness of kaolin and alters the morphology of the kaolin particles completely. When the calcination process is done at around 700 deg C, the dehydrogenate of the kaolin is complete, forming a partially crystalline metakaolin. Fully calcined kaolin products with an amorphous structure are formed around 1000 deg C.
Fully Calcined kaolins can be surface modified with functionalized coupling agent Silane to give a particle coating capable of chemically bonding with the polymer. After surface treatment, the dispersion of filler is also improved. In view of the reduced surface activity, calcined kaolins give good reinforcement and permanent set properties, at the same time maintaining very good processing conditions.
